Deputy Jeremie Nix of the Marion County Sheriff’s Office in Florida is now being hailed a hero for saving an infant’s life. On a cloudy Wednesday evening, around 5:30 pm, Nechole Crowell stopped at the side of the road in distress as she, and a second passenger attempted to flag down a police cruiser to help save her baby boy. According to WESH 2, an NBC affiliate, her three-month-old son, King, was unresponsive in the backseat and Crowell didn’t know what to do.
Fortunately, Nix, who was an off-duty at the time, saw her blinking lights and pulled over immediately. He went straight to her son and started performing CPR. As he attempted resuscitation, he still got zero response from the little one and made the quick and wise choice to take him to the nearest hospital. “I just kind of panicked and started crying and I was just like tell me that he is breathing,” Nechole told WESH. The deputy’s dashcam got all of this footage on record and showed the officer rushing the baby into his cruiser and driving off.
Both King’s mother and Nix’s cars were shown on tape leaving the Southeast Lake Weir Avenue and 17th Street intersection en route to Ocala Regional Medical Center. “I’m not waiting on medics. I’m a half a mile away from ORMC. I’m heading to their emergency room with the baby,” he told the dispatcher.
Baby King arrived at the hospital and received prompt treatment from the staff and is expected to make a full recovery thanks to the deputy’s quick-thinking actions. “I am thanking God and I’m just grateful and so I want the world to know that he is amazing and he’s a hero in my book, whether he’s a hero in anyone else’s or not. And I am sure when King gets old enough to hear the story he will think he is a hero as well,” Nechole expressed to WESH, after the incident
Many touching sentiments have been shared all over the Internet in response to Deputy Nix’s fearless story. Marion County Sheriff’s Office shared their appreciation on their Facebook page, overwhelmed with pride. “Doctors also said that because of K9 Deputy Nix’s actions, Baby Kingston is alive today. We are tremendously proud of Deputy Nix and we can already see that he and Baby Kingston will have a deep connection that will last a lifetime!!”
Local newscaster, Greg Fox, tweeted a video of him and his coworkers saying a happy hello to King and his mother to show support, with the caption “@JasonTheNewsGuy @MImperatoWESH and @AmandaOberWESH welcome Nechole Crowell and four month old #Kingston to the news set! He’s doing great after his rescue by @MCSOFlorida Deputy last week.”
Though it is certain that what Nix has done is nothing short of incredible, he remains humble. “In my 17 years of doing this job, that was the most scary, emotional and rewarding day ever,” he told CBS News. “I remember praying, thanking God for putting me in the right place at the right time for the right reason.”
