The Breakthrough Listen project was created by Stephen Hawking to look for intelligent signs of life outside of our planet. Hawking’s goal was to identify signs of life elsewhere besides our Earth. Russian internet billionaire, Yuri Milner, is also a huge supporter of this initiative.
But the Breakthrough Listen project recently revealed that they had detected mysterious and strange signals that could emanate from life outside of Earth.
The project noticed 15 repeated fast radio bursts, known as FRBs, from a galaxy far away.
The signals were heard and observed over a 30 minute period from a dwarf galaxy more than 3 billion light years away from us.
Scientists and researchers of the project are unsure whether the noise is coming from black holes, rotating neutron stars or if they are communication signals sent out by alien life.
However, this is not the first time that astronomers have detected radio pulses emanating from this source. The previous signals that were observed were slower and didn’t come at this high of a frequency.
The 15 signals originated from FRB 121102 and according to a postdoctoral researcher at the Project, Vishal Gajjar, he said: ‘these are the highest frequency and widest bandwidth detection of bursts from FRB 121102 obtained to-date.’
