Three years ago, Whitney Way Thore took the Internet by storm with her dance video entitled “A Fat Girl Dancing.” In it, Thore, who had been criticized harshly for her weight, set out to show that fat doesn’t equal not fit. The video took off, vaulting Thore from her job as a radio producer to television fame.
In February 2014, Thore and dancer Kevin Webb choreographed a modern-dance routine to Snoop Dogg’s “Wiggle” and put it up on the Youtube channel of her radio show, Jared and Katie in the Morning. After the video went viral, she was featured on ABC News and the Today Show.
Thore took her fame as an opportunity to share her struggles and body-positive attitude. In early 2015, she starred in a show on TLC called My Big Fat Fabulous Life, following her struggles as a fat woman in a world that doesn’t want fat women to thrive or be happy.
She tackles issues like trying to be healthy while fat, and the double standard that society applies to fat men vs. fat women. She also uses the show to raise awareness about Polycystic Ovary Syndrome, a disease Thore has that causes weight gain and hormonal problems.
