When you ask someone to think about what they associate with The Simpsons, answers may vary. Some might say Homer (or his infamous exclamation). Bart being choked. Nelson’s, “Ha ha!” But what a lot of other people may mention is the music that accompanied the 28-season-long staple in people’s homes.

Alf Clausen’s music for The Simpsons has earned him award wins and nominations including two Emmy wins in 1997 and 1998 as well as five Annie Awards from 1997 – 2007. Considering his contributions to the series, fans everywhere were shocked to discover that he had been terminated.

In a statement to Deadline, producers of the show said, “We tremendously value Alf Clausen’s contributions to The Simpsons. He will continue to have an ongoing role in the show. This is the part where we would make a joke but neither Alf’s work nor the music of The Simpsons is treated as anything but seriously by us.”

Clausen confirmed the news of his termination on August 30 where he was met with an onslaught of support from devastated fans everywhere.

Many fans responded with GIFS and photos from the show.

Others questioned the future of the show.

Mostly, people were pretty disappointed.
